Farms: Working on a Japanese Farm (in Hokkaido)

I spent the day (8:00am - 5:00pm) working at Yuyu farm in Yuchi, Hokkaido (Japan). I planned to stay for a couple of days earlier this month... but I ended up getting sick (and having to cancel). Luckily, they let me drop by later in the month to help out for the afternoon. If you're interested in staying there and/or volunteering, I HIGHLY recommend it. They're great. I love volunteering on farms - especially organic/sustainable farms. That looks like such a wonderful experience. It is really nice spending time with elders as well because they have so much wisdom and life experience to share with us seishōnen

That bonnet is killer, lol. I LOVE the smell of tomato plants, and the flavor of fresh tomatoes not picked until the peak of ripeness is heaven. Cut the little ones you're picking in half, add thinly sliced garlic, a drizzle of good olive, a sprinkle of sea salt and a grind of pepper (do they do black pepper in Japan? I haven't heard it mentioned in any of the videos yet.). Put them in a large pan, not too deep, and roast them in a slow oven, 325°, until the juices have almost completely evaporated. Use them on homemade pizza, (I think I remember you and Ryosuke making homemade pizza), or eat them like candy. Yum! They'll keep a long time if you store them in a jar, covered in good olive oil and in the fridge. I add more garlic, but I have a garlic addiction. The oil they are stored in is also lovely drizzled on pizza crust in place of conventional tomato sauce, or used in salad dressings. Sorry for the babbling about cooking. I love to cook and these beautiful tomatoes made me drool, as does much of the beautiful food in your videos.

I was hiking up a pretty steep forested mountainside in Japan and stopped in exhaustion to rest. Moments later a little 90 year old mama-san in a kimono passed me and grinned and patted my head and gave me a piece of candy. Then she just kept right on climbing. I never caught up to her.

Gives older people something to do... A purpose.. Else they will just wither away... I think i'll retire somewhere in japan if possible..

I heard mississippi has similar air and ground for stuff to grow. My boyfriend has been there and says there's a magnolia planted in one of japan's cities and the ground is very a like to my states. I've never been to texas however, but I'd like to! but japan is obviously a given :D I just love this video, I watch it over and over along with all your other gardening videos. <3 It's just so fun thinking about growing your own food

Simple jobs are fun. When things have too many shifting especially in western working groups where you do too many things or switch roles all day it gets frustrating and people get pissed.

I plan on going to japan next year trying to just wander around and work for a place to stay and food for a few days or weeks wherever i am, but i feel really insecure about "just going and trying". How would you plan an entire year to live like this? Contact farmers way early in advance or just plan the first weeks and ask the people you stay with to recommend you?I already have contacted a few host families online, but most told me to ask again once i was actually in japan :/What would you recommend?
