Benton County is located in the northwest part of the state of Indiana, and it is part of the Lafayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. It borders with the state of Illinois. The county's population was 8,854 - according to the 2010 Census. There are six incorporated towns and several small unincorporated settlements; additionally, it is divided into 11 townships which provide local services. The county seat is the town of Fowler. There are four wind farm developers in Benton County: 1. Orion Energy Group LLC—Benton County Wind Farm project 2. BP Alternative Energy—Fowler Ridge Wind Farm project 3. enXco—Hoosier Wind Farm project 4. Pattern Energy-Fowler Ridge IV, Amazon Wind Farm 1. Orion Energy-Benton County Wind Farm is approved for 135 turbines: It started in 2007. It is located in the northwest corner of the county in Richland and York Townships. To date, there are 87 GE 1.5 megawatt turbines equaling 130.5 megawatts standing. Duke Energy has purchased 135 megawatts from this farm. The electricity from this wind farm goes to a substation in Kentland and then to the Chicago market. 2. BP Alternative Energy- Fowler Ridge Wind Farm is approved for 460 turbines: Phase 1 & 3 started in 2008 and has 222 turbines that produce 402 megawatts. There are 182 Vestas V-82, 1.65 megawatt turbines and 40 Clipper C-96, 2.5 megawatt turbines. Phase II started in 2009 and has 133 GE 1.5 MW turbines - equaling 199.5 MW. Dominion Resources located in Richmond, Virginia has purchased 600 megawatts. This will go to Appalachian Electric Company. Additionally, Vectren has purchased 50 megawatts from the BP Phase II and will likely be one of the companies to purchase power that will be used in Indiana. 3. enXco-Hoosier Wind Farm is approved for 53 turbines equaling 106 megawatts: This wind farm started in 2010. It is located in the northeast corner of the county in Union and Gilboa townships. It covers seven square miles. There are 53 RePower 2.0 turbines used for this wind farm. enXco is partnering with Indianapolis Power and Light Company to produce a 102 megawatt wind turbine energy generator facility. 4. Pattern Energy-Fowler Ridge IV - Amazon Wind Farm is approved for 65 turbines: This wind farm entered commercial operations on January 1, 2016. It covers Center North section of Benton County - Center, Parish Grove and Richland townships, 7 x 8 mile coverage. There are 65 Siemens 2.3 MW a08 meter rotors for 150 MWs. Amazon Web Services (Amazon.com) will be using 116 MW of the electricity. Pattern Energy purchased the land agreements for phase IV from BP.
