Ginseng expert, Bob Beyfuss, explains the best forest types to look for when growing ginseng. While ginseng does not like a lot of nutrients, it does prefer calcium-rich soils. Bob identifies many different plants within the understory that signify whether the site is good for growing ginseng.

Hi there I live in Central Minnesota in my backyard I have about 50 acres of dense sugar maple oak Birch and various pulp trees. The soil is Sandy with several inches of decomposing leaf litter on top. My question is without north facing hills or steep hills can I still grow ginseng on relatively flat to slightly rolling ground?
Thanks. -

Just an outstanding compendium of info in a very short and terse presentation.
The geographic latitude is Pennsylvania and northward, ideal, with sugar maple due to high calcium content in its fallen leaves serving as nutrient, with at least 1000 hrs of 40 to 45 degree F temp each winter, north/northeast facing wooded forest land...
Is there any study on the correlation of ideal population growth of wild seng and altitude, angle or steepness of hills/mountains growth areas, and average distances from stream/rivers...you mentioned ideal areas for growth needs good drainage which implies certain angle of terrain of a certain distance from valleys/gulleys/streams/rivers..... -
I have purchased some Ginseng seeds that say they will come up this Spring, how do you feel about this? can you buy Ginseng seeds that will come up the next Spring? also I have some stratified Ginseng seeds that I planted before Winter hit and have gone threw a Winter so they will hopefully come up this next Spring, but the seeds I have ordered that say they will come up this Spring I'm not sure about? I plan on planting them to see? let me know you're thoughts as I am new to planting and growing Ginseng and can tell you know a lot about this plant,! thanks

Thank you so much for the information! i am in New Brunswick Canada, living on a 100 acre tree farm, some old growth forest on the mountain. there are many sugar maple on the ridge and I was curious if whether or not what I was looking at was actually Ginseng. Now I am sure it is and am looking forward to seeing it again this year. What color is the flower when in season and does it flower around the same time as the other plants you mentioned?

I have a dry ginseng root that has the new bulb for the next year plant and I was wondering if it would produce a new plant if I planted it in the woods. Its been dried for about 6 months.
