http://www.HomesByHeidy.com - My wife and I purchased our almost 2 acre property in a conservation area over 30 years ago. We were drawn to the area for several reasons; the easy access to RT 495, the rural nature of the neighborhood and the proximity to Kenoza Lake, which my wife and I had jogged previous to our purchase. We also wanted to purchase a site that would enable me to showcase our work as a design builder. We decided to purchase this property, which originally was the corner of an old farm, because it was on the side of a south facing hill. We knew we could create a private setting and site the house a couple of hundred feet from the road. We spent 30 years transforming this totally wild and overgrown site, into one that features over 600 feet of old stone walls plus a seasonal pond with a sloping stream. We have planted hundreds of both of our mother's perennials. We tried to plant shrubs, hedges and trees that complemented the existing high bush blueberries and the abundance of hardwoods. Our artesian well and sprinkler system enables us to maintain the lawns and plantings. We have many annual events that we hold outdoors, and once hosted 200 people for a friend's wedding. Many of our friends comment on our “estate like setting". As it took us a few years to clear the property, we were able to take our time designing our passive solar home. We finally sited the house into the north sloping hill, closer to the property line. This maximized the southern area which allowed the views from the house and patio to overlook the lawn and plantings. The main living areas of the house all have south facing views. The house was set up taking full advantage of the site. The house itself has 5 levels, which are set half levels apart. An addition was included 15 years ago which totally transformed the house. It created an expansive, sunlit lower level which allowed for two additional entrances and a circular flow pattern. This addition also added a new entrance into a breakfast nook that includes wonderful display cabinets and additional counter space that enables us to easily have Thanksgiving and other sit down parties for 30 people. We use our restaurant quality gas grill several times a week. We were lucky to have been able to use a couple of excellent masons. Our chimney has 5 flues and 3 fireplaces. My wife's uncle, a retired stone mason, and her dad, stayed with us for over a week installing our living room crab orchard stone veneer and hearth. It is difficult for us to determine what is most special about our home. It has been a work in progress for 30 years. Everything was designed with function in mind - first. Each section and each built-in is connected to the others. Some of our friends feel our wine cellar is best, others say the display cabinets, while others mention "all the landscaping". Several of our clients respond with "the whole package". There is an abundance of sight lines throughout and we have several 30 and 40 foot views inside the house. We have been very fortunate to have been able to use the same craftsmen all of these years, especially our cabinet maker. We have painted, cherry, teak and mahogany built-ins.
