Many are pushed into depression and some to the point of suicide; officially, 200 take their own lives each year. FRANCE 24's Chris Moore and Sylvain Rousseau spoke to farmers in Brittany, one of France's main agricultural regions, who feel increasingly isolated and uncertain. One reason for their anger is the sharp fall in prices for dairy and other animal products. Among them is Jacques Jeffredo, a vegetable farmer who set out some 600 white crosses in front of a local basilica in October 2015 to symbolise the 600 farmers who he says commit suicide every year. all over the world, we demand cheap food, so farmers are subsidised one way or another. But farmers produce one of the three or four things we actually really need: subsidies take away from farmers the ability to ask that people pay the real price of producing food, and put the power to influence the price in other hands - and the consequence is that all over the world, farmers are producing more and more for a more marginal income - slight overproduction prompts a dramatic fall in prices offered, and the only way a farmer can help himself maintain his income is to produce still more. As their output increases, the price per unit weight falls faster, and their input costs increase; farmers despair and some can't see a future and kill themselves. We should pay the real price for food. We used to, you know. We spent more than a quarter of the family income on food when I was a kid - and the food was tastier and higher quality because there was no race to the bottom to shave another 0.5% off the cost.

I'm not jealous to farmers, shop keepers a.k.a. entrepreneur. If you start to be one these days you're almost your whole life in huge debts. Lovely EU.
