It's a nice farm your grandparents have there. I like how they diverted the rain water runoff from the hills. :) I think asparagus and other perennial crops are easier to deal with in the long run compared to the annual veggies that need re-planted each year. It's less work overall.
Your grandma's garden soil could use some serious amending or mulching, IMHO. Have you looked into applying a really thick layer of wood chips using the fallen limbs and trees onsite? I think it's a wonderful idea for large gardens such as your grandma's. Though a lot of work initially, it would make gardening easier for them over time.
