video is combination of slides and 8mm movie films! Anthony Padelskas owned a tobacco farm growing cigar wrapper tobacco from the 1920's to the 1950's. After the 1950's he ran it as a gentleman's farm raising Black Angus Steers, chickens, growing a corn and a large garden as well as hay for the steers and for sale. The farm is located in East Granby Connecticut and was in the family until the 1980's. Wrapper tobacco is grown without shade, which is the better known way of growing tobacco in the Connecticut Valley.

That was the days when you could make a living. Great vid. thanks.

Yes, and back then the farmers thought they were doing everyone a favor by planting toxic tobacco.

That is just down the street, we were at 82 South Main, just past the High School, the farm is still on the right side, although we sold it years ago and they stopped raising tobacco in the 50's

Do you have any videos of it? I would love to see them. :)

My great grandfather grew broad leaf tobacco for decades on Ellington Road in South Windsor, Connecticut. His name was John Lathrop. Your grandfather probaly knew him. It looks like a lot of hard work! :)

Looking back at the fields towards the gravel pit there is a stream, 50 years ago there was where they dumped all the house hold trash and we used to shoot up some of the bottles in the dump. I would love to go back there with a shovel, there would be bottle from around 1900 on!

The new owners have pretty much redone the farmhouse, it looks very nice. They put in a pool where the garden used to be. The tobacco shed fell down years ago. I looked at it on google maps, 96 South Main St, East Granby CT , that pegs at the entrance to the High School, the farm is 3 farms south on the opposite side of Rt 187. It is the house that is close to the road and parelled to it and the barn at a right angle. They let the back field go to brush. with a pool to the side of house.

All but the 3 young kids, my two brothers and myself, have all passed away. The farm at 182 South Main St in East Granby CT still exists but it no longer is even a "Gentleman's farm" my uncle sold it back in the late 90's. The house and the main barn are still there but the tobacco barn fell down years ago. At least it hasn't become a sub-division as many neighboring farms did.

Where is everyone now?
