Chiziro is a village, made up of widely dispersed small farms and settlements, centred about 6 kilometres to the east of Chipata, in Eastern Province, Zambia. There is no electricity supply, water or sanitation and the villagers until recently collected all of their water from a small stream running from a natural spring. The buildings are mostly mud brick and elephant grass thatched huts. In the Chiziro district there are about 250 children of school age (between five and twelve). Very few attend school in Chipata, due to the distances involved and the difficulty of the terrain. At least 30% of the children in Chiziro are orphans due to high local infection rates of HIVAids(25%), malaria and TB. The main occupation is subsistence farming; villagers taking what surplus they can produce for sale in Chipata. This project is supported by Teacher Aid a small charity based in Wales. A feeding programme is in place. And a shelter has been built which is a temporary home to 3 classes. Foundations for 3 classrooms have now been laid. This has all been done on a shoestring with community of Chiziro supplying all the labour. This is truly a community project.
