Farms: Thailand - Baby Elephants & Patara Elephant Farm

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do your research before visiting an elephant sanctuary in Thailand, or any animal sanctuary for that matter. ---- Working with elephants in Thailand has always been something I was skeptical of. Luckily, I had the opportunity to go see for myself thanks to an invitation to the "Thai Fit Challenge," recently put on by the Thai tourism board, GoPro and Adidas. From the Anantara Resort in Chiang, our first challenge was to go beyond a simple selfie and riding an elephant, to learn about the process of actually caring for elephants in Thailand. At the Patara Elephant Farm just outside Chiang Mai, we were each introduced to our own elephant to work with as well as a caretaker who looked after them. I was paired with Boon Gin, a 21 year-old male rescued from a circus, who enjoyed a good back massage and long walks through the forest. Throughout our time together I learned about how to identify an unhealthy elephant as well the specific practices of Rescue, Recovery, Reproduction and Reintroduction to ensure the elephants well being. Once our work was done and Boon Gin retired to the mountains for the evening, we were allowed to join in on a little play time. A baby elephant, otherwise known as "lap elephants" on the internet, greeted us as with playful cuddling and wrestling. It was the perfect ending to a great day with these beautiful creatures. — PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do your research before visiting an elephant sanctuary in Thailand, or any animal sanctuary for that matter. Elephant Tourism in Thailand is a major problem and many of these places do not treat the animals well. PLEASE DO NOT go to places that use hooks to control the elephants or saddles to allow multiple people to ride elephants. An elephants and Thai people are close. We're family. I love it and an elephants can really feel me. It knows what we think and it response us by eyes! :) I love this place. They sacrifice themselves for those. Patara Elephant Farm is for a poor elephant who injured by accident. You can donate money for them. By the way, you have to be careful and don't stay with the elephant alone, a caretaker should be there too. Most of the elephant are sensitive, you never know how do their feel in that time but caretaker knows. The caretaker not just give them food or clean up but their know what an elephant want and how the elephant feels. Some of the elephant not allow to somebody close to them accept the caretaker. So, for who wants to go there, you must follow the rules and respect them.

Was this the full day or the half day visit with patara? I'll be going this Fall and was wondering if their half day program included the elephant baths. Thanks for sharing your experience! It's made me even more excited about the trip!

Thanks for mentioning to people to do research first b4 going to visit with elephants. There are too many places that pretend to care about elephants! If they paint or do any tricks, give rides, are chained at any time or bullhooks are used...Please do not support them!!! A good (REAL) sanctuary in Thailand is Elephant Nature Park where all are treated with love! I hope to go someday!! http://www.elephantnaturepark.org/
