Tarpan's are extinct. The last known Tarpan died in the 1900s. These are Heck horses.

I was married to Ellen Thrall, the founder and writer of The American Tarpan Studbook.......She devoted the last 20 years of her life raising, promoting, and riding this amazing horse.....She was intently devoted to the breed and strived for many years to establish the breed thru out North America.....I have noted several posts denying the authenticity of Ellen's work....stating these are not "true" Tarpans........but Hecks(?) Alluding I assume to the original european scientist Heinz Heck who begun the initial research and back-breeding.......I can assure you that present bloodline originating from Ellen's breeding line were direct descendants of her original pair of true back-bred Tarpan horses privately purchased from the atlanta zoo in the 1980s....These original animals had been imported several years earlier and had been on display at the park's children's zoo were Ellen was a senior keeper

0:42 What is the "collar-like" thing around that tarpan's neck?
-
Yes they are trainable and are often shown and can be ridden by adults. This particular herd is mostly being used to try to preserve it as a breed.

Alot of American Mustangs trace back to the Iberian that is true. However these have tested 0% for Iberian according to what I have been told. Mrs Dixon has been very careful in this breeding program to make sure that the herd is pure to its earliest reclamation. These are not related to American Mustangs in any way nor have mustangs or they been mixed with this herd. This is one of the reasons that each horse is not only genetically tested but also careful records have been kept for years.

While I agree with you that the European wild horses are closest to those that existed in the wild in North America. This particular herd was not back bred to the Iberian horses. These were imported from the original herd that was the first restoration in Poland in 1933. Those horses here in America that were interbred with mustangs and other Spanish type horses produce are not genetically the same. The Foremost Genetic Dr from Texas is the one testing and advising Mrs Dixon on this herd.

Unlike the oregon herd these horses from Virginia breed to type and it is very difficult on first view to tell them apart. I am saying this from first hand knowledge as I have seen them a few times in person. I would love to see someone purchase these horses and preserve them if for no other reason that they are an important link to the recent past as well as the historic past.

According to what I was told these are actually documented from the original herd of reclaimed Tarpan Horses imported to the USA (to an Upstate NY zoo park) by two German Doctors in 1950. They are incredibly rare and the only herd of pure reclaimed Tarpan in the USA. They have been Genetically tested to make sure that no modern domestic horses have been added to their breeding program. This year there are over 30 of these horses in this herd.

Hello, In fact these are Polish konicks (koniki polskie) wrongly called tarpans. You can recognize it by the dark line on the back. They have been introducted to US after II WW. They are not big (about 140cm) but very strong and inteligent. And yes, they are totaly rideable. Espetialy good in forests becouse they have natural ability for that. My wife has two of them here in Poland. If anyone wants to see more of them i can show you some pics or movies:))

European wild horses are the closest ones to the ones that existed in North America, during the Late Pleistocene. Not Przewalski horses. This means that the iberian mustangs horses can still re-selected and backbred.
-
Some lineages can still be backbred. Of course that the result won´t be 100% perfect, but very close to it. But the work done with these horses of the video, was a failure. Check my comments below. In the mustang population there are hidden about 3/4 different wild horse ecotypes, that existed in Iberian Peninsula. It´s still possible to backbreed all of them, but for that we need genetic, phenotypic, skeletal, historical and archaeological evidences. I have managed to collect some of it.

Obviosly? they're NOT extinct...see the video..its like saying that "humans" are extinct, because we're not exactly like our "original" ancestors...they're officially called "Tarpan" horses...these are NOT "hecks".
