See http://green.onevillage.tv/?p=163 -- this short film by John Harrison shows how Irno Pretto Farm in Brazil was transformed by introducing the Integrated Farming and Waste Management System (IFWMS) developed by George Chan of the ZERI Foundation (www.zeri.org). Productivity and biodiversity were increased while generating energy, reducing waste and eliminating pollution.

do you know anything about hog breeds? the pigs they have can not tolerate being outside they are commercial hogs they lack the bone structure and hair that haritage breeds have but they grow faster and have more live births its a trade off and keeping them pinned up is absolutely nessisary for that breed and is the most humain thing to do. oh and FYI they raise them for meat not pets they don't have souls so don't be such a baby

animals can do the process you are doing here naturally. just free the pigs, let them run on the fields and enjoy the muddy puddles.

Waste management isno problem using Atovi Technology.A premix powder mix 2.5 kls Atovi per ton of feeds. It corrects & maintains digestive system. All nutrients are readily absorbed & utilized leaving no undigested protein in the manure, verylow ammonia fumes, nonpathogenic & organic fecalwaste,no need of decomposition. Atovi induces natural detoxification, making meat free from antibiotic and chemical residue, with low cholesterol, lean meat, less fats with no rancid smell. rezeiba2003@yahoo.com

The pig farming comments are relevant. Its best if you have animals free range and not penned up. The point here is to consider more integrated and holistic approaches to solving waste problems. These principles of integrated systems management can be applied anywhere we face a problem of unprocessed waste is a potential problem and nuisance.

There is nothing attractive about keeping pigs locked up in cages their entire lives. I think that is sick, cruel, and I would never want to eat it.
-
This is not an excellent example of sustainable farming. Would it not just be easier to put the pigs out on the pasture, out on the corn fields, and let them spread their manure naturally? There is no need to spend all the time and energy collecting the manure, turning it into a compost, and use machines to spread it back to the earth. Just let the pig be a pig and do it's thing.

that is a great idea!

Love the recycling and efficiency.., now if they could just eliminate those gestation crates...
-
Its great what they are doing about the waste- but y do they need to keep them in thoughs cages? they can barly move -- poor things I know about gestation cages but I don't think there is really any use for them <
