If you're a fan of fresh picked berries and locally grown produce, you've probably visited Millar Berry Farms in the south end of London. The farm is facing some hardships this year. Their strawberries are infected with viruses spread by small bugs called strawberry aphids. This bugs transfer several different viruses from one plant to another. The Millars think the insects came from strawberry plant farms on Canada's east coast where they buy their plants, but this hasn't been confirmed. Other farms across the city don't look like they've had an infection. Although we haven't heard much about these viruses, the owner of Heeman's (another farm across town) believes it's an underreported problem. The virus hit their farm in 2005, and they've started to diversify where they buy their plants. The Millars are hoping the government will help to fund farmers who are feeling the pinch from this problem. Currently, the Ontario government has no system set-up to address the aphids. The viruses aren't harmful to humans, so don't be afraid to continue eating strawberries! - Taylor Simmons, Journalism Student
