Farms: Story #5: Adam Burke and The Veterans Farm, 5-hour ENERGY® Helps Amazing People
Productivity | Information | History | View | Quality
Adam Burke served a 16-month tour in Iraq and was injured in a mortar attack two weeks before coming home. "It really broke me down and it took years to recover from this injury," remembers Adam. The army vet currently suffers from PTSD and from migraines caused by a traumatic brain injury. He found farming helped him. After running into a young homeless veteran at a mall, Adam decided there needed to be more programs out there to help vets reintegrate back into society. In April 2010, he started Veterans Farm in Jacksonville, Florida. The Farm trains veterans during six to nine month fellowships and gets them back on their feet. Fellow Shawn Rankin came to the Farm from Michigan after no one would employ him due to injuries sustained serving in the Navy. He was homeless and now has a house and is starting a farm. "Everyone just needed an opportunity," said Adam. Produce and sauces made at Veterans Farm are sold weekly at farmers markets. Additionally, they donate thousands of pounds of food to local homeless shelters and food pantries. Adam was awarded the 2012 Presidential Citizens Medal by President Obama, the nation's second highest civilian honor. After 5-hour ENERGY Helps Amazing People surprised Adam with a check for $50,000, he told us the money would go right back to helping bring more veterans into his program. Sad that these commercials are the exception and not the rule. In a monetary system clearly companies need to MAKE MONEY, so lets get passed that and focus on whats most important here. How many companies actually make a conscious effort to actually design an ad campaign around helping real people overcome real problems? Imagine if this was mandatory with corporations, athletes, and celebrities. EVERYONE should be working to help others. Humanity, that's what it's called, friends. We should all be involved. 5 Hour Energy, way to lead by example :) If there is anything I can do as an illustrator to add to Veteran's Farm feel free to contact me at jerrybeckasylum@yahoo.com

This is great, I really hope The Veterans Farm continues to be successful and that more vets are able to help out or create their own programs to support each other. Check out this video "Coming Home" about giving homeless veterans a new place to live to help them re-start their lives. On a day like today, it's so important to keep those who put their lives on the line in our thoughts and do whatever we can to help them.
