This is a BBC2 documentary from 2003 and probably one of the best on Stalin. The archive footage is very good and it draws upon some excellent evidence from close witnesses, including Stalin's own family. Uploaded for educational purposes only.

Everything he did was pointless. He didn't even know what he was doing.

When you're a communist dictator, your job is to ensure the system doesn't fall apart and that everyone actually follows communism. You do what you need to, to ensure the system stays together, even if it means doing destructive things, because the communist system among the people is what will establish morality where it is due. It is not a Dictator's job to be moral, its a hard job and takes strong will to think coldly to ultimately ensure the greater good. And believe me, communism is the best system for humanity to live under. Also, everything said here is incredibly exaggerated. America over exaggerates everything, period, that is the reason for their people's blindness. Besides, even if the dictator and his keys to power are cold, and essentially above the common people, as long as they keep the system alive (which they tend to be good at, if nothing else) then the few that are above the common people arent going to be there in their face screaming "im better than you"... the dictator sure isnt going to be, the soldiers and military officers are going to be on base, and the law enforcement only come in contact with the public when they are on the job, pursuing a criminal. The other 90 percent of the population are never really exposed to people right there in your face saying im superior to you, because everyone is equal in terms of wealth and value, and this has a valuable emotional effect on human nature. It eliminates competition and the feeling that everyone is two faced, and instead forces friendships and emotional connections for success which means so much more than wealth. It raises a moral generation. In capitalism, every other person is either above or below you based on how good they are at profiting off of you, and this just stalls advancement for a country when these profits are going to millions of people individually who work like dogs to buy things they dont even need, from people that also profit off of THEM. All of this just creates an incredibly toxic environment. despite the luxury. So which one will you choose? And if you think the soviet union is a lost cause, think again. Russia still protects the remaining communist nations, making it still pro communist. And some insight:It is better to have every nation in the world be left alone to do their own thing without spreading their ideas, that way there are more possibilities for advancement in humanity from different cultures and we can see whoever is most successful/impressive and reaches the most advanced form of humanity the quickest, then others can use those ideas and align it with their own unique culture which results in more possibilities for humanity to learn from and see its flaws, accelerating advancement. With imperialism or any parent nations, this can never happen. And whatever you may say about the remaining communist nations, North Korea, Cuba, Vietnam, they are nations that have never conducted imperialism, but rather defeated America's imperialism with the help of Russia. They are isolated and keep to themselves, they perserve their culture, and rather or not you think it is good or bad, you still need to respect the fact that there is no one right way to live on this planet, it's to big for that. If Communist nations are the only ones who stay true to this, and they were essentially birthed by the soviet union, what does this tell you? The Soviet Union was NOT an empire, Russia guards nations from having their culture perverted, making Russia the moral compass of the world. Imperialism is statistically bad for humanity, this is why Nazi Germany, Napoleon and Rome was evil. This is what separates Hitler from Stalin. When you have any nations trying to be the police of the entire world, what I mentioned above cannot be stayed true to, and currently the nation trying to be the police of the world is the USA with over 800 giant military bases all over the world when every other country only has 40. Russia has always guarded against imperialism. Which means by being a soldier for the Russian Federation I will be protecting the last remaining glory in this world, and the last remaining glory resides in the remaining communist nations, because there is glory in independence. Never forget Putin is a former KGB officer, and he fits the description of the "perfect dictator" I mentioned above, he's got his entire government under his wing and has now enlightened syria from USA rebels. (this makes up for the soviet afghan loss, as it is EXACTLY the same situation) What does this tell you? Something similar to the soviet union now exists, and it is in secret, hidden from the eyes of people who think like you. So yes, go on saying Russia is capitalist. The more it is said, the more it is masqueraded. Putin realizes the mistake the USSR made by being atheist, it spooked the world because religion was still how the world answered its questions back then, which is why people sided with the bible thumping Ronald Raegan, Putin will not make the same mistake under his rule, and all the sudden he is calling himself christian and establishing a religious state in Russia? Do you see where this is going? On top of this, the remaining communist nations owe it to Russia to re-establish the soviet union for helping them defeat America's imperilism, China has been thanking Russia for years for this by ripping off the USA and tying them in a square knot, to the point where the entire US industry is dependent on China, distracting them into thinking China is the nation they need to get hostile with, giving USSR2.0 some space to rise. Again I say, do you see where this is going? The crimson flag will rise again, and I will be right under it when it happens, guarding it until the very day I die. The truth is we don't know if there is a god or an afterlife, or if there's one right way to live, but we do know destruction and creation in our universe exist on an equal scale, and animals aren't going to journey to space any time soon and harness the most powerful sources of energy to create a world without death and destruction, only humans are capable of doing that, and imperialism in the world must be eliminated first.

Fascinating how Stalin and Hitler had exactly the same upbringing... Extremely violent father, doting mother. They even lived in the same city (Berlin) briefly, went to the same coffeehouses although they never met (Stalin upcoming violent rebel, Hitler homeless loser at that time in history).
-
shame about the tsar
-
Why wasn't this documentary destroyed? The fact must always be that Nazis and the Right have killed more people than the Communists and the Left - even though it is untrue.
-
interesting, nobody in comments seem to notice how evil person he was, going as far as killing 50 mln his own countryman, family included, he was much worse than hitler, yet everybody focuses on jews and calls Hitler the worst.
-
Why speak of Stalin, Hitler and Imperialism as if it is logical to compare them for some reason? I don't get people who say yes what Stalin did was wrong but look what happened to the native Americans from the Imperialist forces, that was even worse! History is to be understood and thankfully not repeated not serve as a piece of evidence that one awful period of time was better than another. In my opinion there is no point in dwelling on failed political and economic theories if they did not work and there are still the constant reminders of that everywhere so instead of trying to dig out the ''best'' worse thing why not move forward? Besides historically only Democracy has proven its benefits so better focus on that and how to improve its rightful application in the future. Of course that is just my opinion.

Because Stalin's lover did not believe in politics, she was his mother. Stupid psychologists and their Oedipus complex. Sometimes I wonder if they really this idiotic.
-
Stalin most likely fell victim to his own principles. The famous Russian historian Eduard Radzhinsky claims that one of his body guards / close men poisoned him after seeing all the terror and destruction.

Thanks for posting.
If you haven't already seen it, this:

...is a great film by Nikita Mikhalkov about a Soviet hero who is eventually destroyed by the system that once considered him a Hero. Great film, but there seem to be no happy endings in Russian cinematography. <<BOP>> or "Thief" is another example of this. -
he was a giant among midgets!

How many stupid and aggressive comments
-
Here's a good idea, no government at all and everybody's got guns, and no stupid people anywhere, that's a perfect system. and automated farming. There, a perfect system solved. and no power seekers.
-
I had to smirk as the intro says 'viewers warned that some scenes may be upsetting'. Does anyone expect to chuckle their way through an hour and a half of full on Stalin?

39:14 Here it all started...

stalin threw food at the girls he liked, lol could you see danny mcbride playing stalin in a will ferral movie about ww2
-
The damn thing starts off with 2 big ass lie's. He was NOT the powerful man in the world and he wasn't the most worshipped either. The answer to both of those lie's is the same. He was the most feared. Big difference

Lincoln Steffens had said, "I have seen the future and it works." Some future. 74-years that ruined the great Russian society and culture.

35:40 I think "no smoking sign" and she's smoking a cigarette. I wonder who will date tell her not smoke while stalin was there. lol
