New video listing this month November 2013. See below for additional links to race, pedigree, and music videos. This horse has a story. Big Ben is an 8 year old (foaled in March of 2005), 17 hand, bay, off-the-track thoroughbred (OTTB) gelding who raced for 7 successful years as "Menifee Six." Ben ran his last race in August of this year . . . decompressed for a month . . . and now is being trained for the hunter/jumper ring by Carolyn Sabolis Hall and her team at Unami Farm in Pennsburg, PA (just west of Quakertown). The battle is over . . . the Warrior has come home . . . and he is sweet, sweet, sweet. In all our years of training horses in general and thoroughbreds in particular, we've learned that one of the most important characteristics in a new horse is "trainability" . . . humility, a competitive spirit, an eagerness to learn, a desire to please, and an appreciation of compliments. Ben has it all. He really does. He is a large and powerful animal that is surprisingly gently and caring. When buying, training, and selling thoroughbreds, we don't often talk about their pedigrees, but we've never had one quite like Ben's. Secretariat, Alydar, Northern Dancer, Native Dancer, Bold Ruler, Halo, Anne Campbell (KY Broodmare of the Year), and Menifee (one of today's top sires) are all in there. We don't often talk about an OTTB's race history, but we've never had one quite like Ben's. His impressive bloodline blessed him with a powerful (and still sound) body that ran 61 races and had 8 firsts, 7 seconds, 9 thirds, and $172k in earnings. We don't often talk about an OTTB's intensely competitive spirit, but we've never had one quite like Ben's. He was a slow starter and was often last at the beginning of a race . . . a perfect setup for him to get up to speed and chase down the leaders in the last turn. Every race was a battle. As you can see in the video, Ben is now learning lead changes and early jumping. He is a quick learner, and we think it is time for him to bond with a long-term owner. Ben has had at least 5 different owners during his racing career, and none of them loved him the way he needs to be loved. He has no idea how much he is going to enjoy it when his next owner truly loves him, cuddles with him, takes long walks with him, and works with him . . . they will truly become one. We think Ben is a perfect fit for a taller junior rider who is looking for a horse to grow with, to train with, and to win with. He does not spook or get hot. In fact, Ben is so cooperative that a junior rider may be able to complete his training without the need to pay training board to a professional. The music in this video is Michael Jackson's song "Ben" sung by the cast of the TV show Glee. If you're interested, this link http://youtu.be/MryBuCH5vV4 is to a music video that shows the lyrics of the song. Ben's pedigree information came from the www.equineline.com website.
