Farms: Sheep Breeding On The Homestead ~ Makin' Mutton
Productivity | Information | History | View | Quality
Well, it's breeding time on the Homestead. I believe it's important that I observe the animals when they are breeding. That way, I can write down the date, and know (within a day or two) when they will lamb. I can also be sure that the ram actually bred the ewe... I'll show you how I can tell. Warning: If you don't want your children learning about the "birds and the bees" (and sheep)...you may want them to skip this one. I have young ram a nd 2 young ewes...all 3 at about 9 months old. I have yet to see the ram even mount either of the ewes. They all stick close together and he licks the air around them and they seem to hug and kiss, but nothing else. Do you think they are just too young? Maybe I'm just missing the actual event?

Easy ... There's mutton to it !

Often the first heat lacks ovulation, the second one 17 days later should settle the ewe. I used to raddle my rams. That involved smearing a mixture of grease and coloured powder between the ram's front legs. The colour was changed fortnightly say yellow, red and blue. This gave me a good indication of any returns.
