I have had the great pleasure of staying in Tampa Florida with my very dear friend Sandy Moore, the President of Segrest Farms. I got to present to their sales staff, as well as to the Tampa Bay Aquarium Society. While here, I had the unique opportunity to visit the facility where most of the Neon Tetras and Cardinal Tetras are captive bred for the American hobby. I also got to visit one of my favorite places, the University of Florida's Aquaculture Lab and see some breeding projects that got my inner geek smiling- Rainbow Shiners and Polypterus Senegalus. http://msjinkzd.com https://www.facebook.com/msjinkzd/ http://www.segrestfarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=hobbyist.home

not much of a fan of these huge fish production fasilities. those lion fish almost made me cry, not even enough room to fully submerge them self, they need way more space than that. so many of them neglect the fish, I feel like it's the reason so many fish species are becoming weak.

Hi Rachel great video, like you to use old styros great idea. If I am going to transport fish one of these with battery powered air pump best for fish. Less stress also. I just subscribed. CichlidChip from UK.

-
Hey rachel! I noticed you visited a lot of fish farms in the past, Just wondering do a lot of them allow visitors? And how would one get to visit them? Are they publicly open, invitiations, etc?
-
ah...so that's where the big box stores get their neons from...always wondered if they were importing them...glad to know they're not.
-
Awesome, thanks for sharing! A lot of good tips and ideas.

I live in tampa bay and buy from local fish farmers. 99% rejection rate. They dont want anything to do with common folk. I have been privileged to develop a relationship with 3 farms. Believe it or not i live right next to president of florida aquarium fish association and he would not give me light of day. I have been trying for 2 years. Always promises to sell me fish but never shows up or answers phone calls. Welll...at the very least my 300 gallon tanked is stocked so i go there out of want rather than a need.

Very nice ! I liked the lion fishes peeking they heads out of the water to have a better look and not the distorted one or just under water ! Nosy fishes aren't they ? Then those out door tub well in your country only in Florida can do it cause of the weather and the temperature ! Also I see you put it there that many native and even not native fishes illegal or can't be obtained in your country ! Well not to be sarcastic or judgemental but you guys are the 3rd biggest nation on earth after China and India ! Up here we are about 33-35 million and in Europe Germany is the biggest with 80 million compare to you guys 330 million and about 10-12 million illegals ! So also many irresponsible people and one of your nicest state (Florida I've been there couple of times) and in the everglades many native species under threat ! Thanks to like those what you visited out door fish farms ! Hurricane comes and wash away those tubs and gets in the river systems and in the everglades and it just a matter of time when the native species replaced but the invaders ! Like the Burmese python just to name one and the iguanas and the birds the budgies other species of birds pigs and all kinds of other animals ! If I would work for the fish and game I would not allowed them and only indoor ! You see up here in Canada in the summer they may live a couple of months but then they die cause the cold water and the weather ! Prevent the accident cause as you know hurricane always comes like in Catherina in Louisiana and the zoo there they have to let the dolphins go in the wild in the bay of Mexico until they can restore they home ! Not to mention all the fish bird and other species of animals there ! So as you see even in responsible keeping there is nature ! But if there is no zoo or these out door set ups there then when hurricane comes no disaster happens ! People have to understand it ! Many hardy tropical species can survive in American waters ! Also your country has the most aquarist in the world and the reason why you can't keep Asiatic arrowanas ! Endangered species so those poor Asians would sell it to hundreds or thousands of American hobbyist and those species die out in a couple of years ! Asian don't care for the environment like we do and all they care about how to feed they dozen kids who us hungry ! I don't mean to be mean but that is the major reason why the law and the fish and game in your country is so strict ! As you know Joey has a nice Asiatic arrowana but other then him may be in 1 hand you can count how many is in Canada all together if get me ! Also I am very much supporting the captive breed species so those south American natives don't rape nature any longer and do not by from them no more wild cut cause many species there to is on the endangered species list ! Like the little silver tetras adult about an inch in size and they are like metallic when the light hits them ! So compare to us we are about 10 times less polluters and much colder coast to coast to coast ! Yes we have 3 coast LOL ! But I love all of it Rachel ! I hope now I'm not going to be a bad guy to write the facts down ! lol PS: One more thing : In the Mississippi and it's tributaries all those Asian carp ! It's man made natural disaster ! I just hope they really catch them before they enter the great lakes cause that would be huge !
