For just one minute, would you step inside the life of a seal who will be killed in Canada's commercial seal slaughter? Each year, the Canadian government gives sealers the green light to shoot and bludgeon to death hundreds of thousands of baby seals for their soft fur. Sealers shoot them or smash in their heads with clubs, including "hakapiks" (clubs with a metal hook on one end), and drag the seals—sometimes while still conscious—across the ice floes. Because seals are primarily killed for their fur, their bodies are often left to rot on the ice floes or are thrown into the water.
