Russian farmers have rediscovered old agricultural techniques to make large swathes of desolate land fruitful again. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, farmlands in thousands of villages were abandoned as residents migrated to cities seeking better lives. But now entrepreneurs are using the land to produce organic foods in an effort to appeal to a growing, health conscious, middle class.
