Hollow Creek Tree Farm in Gilbert, SC has been using a rotary knife to prune Christmas trees since the 1970s. Here, owner Mike is pruning Virginia Pines that will be ready for sale Christmas season 2011. Hershey is our old farm dog, a Lab/Pointer mix that loves pruning season. The firing of the small engine sparks her hunting instincts and brings out the puppy in her. Visit our website: http://RealTreesMakeScents.com

It depends on what you're pruning. For firs that just need tipping, it may not be. But trees in the south that have so much dense foliage, a knife will wear you out. Most of us old-timers in the south started out with knives, but soon learned mechanical means were less fatiguing. Knives are ok on small trees, but are less efficient on bigger ones.
