Donna Stankus was the architect who then went on to be the Director of NC Solar House at the McKimmon Center near North Carolina State University. It is designed using the principle of Architect Sarah Sasanku, author of the “The Not So Big House”. The main floor is 2240 sq. ft., the finished daylight basement is 1350 sq. ft., and the heated and cooled storage room in the rafters is 220 sq. ft.Aerial 1The house is made out of 10 inch thick Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) (R40), and it is the second home in North Carolina constructed out of this green material. The construction has the roof tied to the foundation by drilling through the layers of AAC as they were laid, tying rebar, and filling the holes with grout. This is hurricane proof construction. The outside finish is stucco. The interior side of the outside walls is plastered. Andersen double paned windows filled with argon gas is the glazing. There are three bedrooms and two baths. The master suite is separated down a small hall with a large walk-in closet and tiled master bathroom, which is handicap-accessible, with 5.5 foot Waterworks tub and separate shower. The playroom /library is surrounded by two bedrooms and a tiled Jack and Jill bathroom with a Waterworks garden tub and separate shower. There is a mudroom and laundry room on the north of the house behind the kitchen. There is a large walk-in pantry near the kitchen. New stainless steel appliances were installed on April 28, 2015. New landscaping was done in the front and the driveway was re-graded, widened, and resurfaced. Two solar panels are located on the roof and heats water in the basement in an 80-gallon water heater which then feeds the 40 gallon electric water heater upstairs. A RAIS soapstone stove, Atlas model with top oven, is located in the living room. The ceiling heights throughout the house are nine feet, with a 10 foot high tray ceiling in the living room. There are ceiling fans in the living room, master bedroom, playroom, and second and third bedrooms. The house overlooks a dammed pond stocked with catfish, bluegill and large-mouth bass that are great fun to catch and very tasty. The south-facing 1.7 acre field is where the owners grew organic vegetables for sale. There are pear and apple trees, grape vines, blackberries, blueberries, fig, and asparagus also. Possum Spring Farm is named after the cold water spring at the bottom of the slope that had provided water to the farmers working the fields for many generations and now feeds a second small dug pond. The farm is a registered Forest Stewardship Farm with the NC Forest Service and follows a Forest Stewardship plan in managing 20+ acres in trees which meet NC Forest Use Taxation requirements, greatly reducing the property taxes. Many maintained paths wind through and around the property for walking and horseback riding. The property bounds Marks Creek for ~3000 feet. Wildlife, such as ducks, song birds, wild turkey, squirrels, deer, woodpeckers, and turtles, is abundant and a joy to watch from the large windows facing south and east.
