Welcome to Episode 28 of the REAL United States Video Blog about average life in the United States. Florida has long been known for its orange and orange juice production, but the number of acres of orange groves have decreased over the years. Still, some orange groves persist, and oranges and other citrus fruit continue to be a significant commercial crop in Florida. Join us for a short visit to an orange grove just outside of Orlando, Florida while the oranges are just about fully ripe! Been reading how huanglongbing (citrus greening) has been spreading through Florida's citrus orchards. I guess limes are pretty much gone now and oranges are on the way out. Growers are staying in business for a few more years by blending the juice from infected fruit (which tastes bad) with juice from healthy fruit. There is no cure at this time. Once infected, the tree will die in a few years.
We have a navel orange in our yard in CA that produced a huge crop this year. The fruit was so thick on the branches that it looked like grapes. We thinned it in August to prevent branches breaking later with the weight. Some years are good and some are not. In 2015 all of the fruit was dry and pithy but this season they were big and sweet and juicy.
Nice series of videos! Thanks for telling these important stories about our great country. -

Great video guys! Thanks :) I am a raw vegan and love the best and ripest fruits and vegetables, especially citris. I am in college and graduate in 2 years. I am saving up to move down to the Tampa area, so I will be in close proximity to these kinds of orange groves and other fruit groves. Thanks for your video it was awesome!
