On a full scale 3 bladed wind turbine it is not wise to allow the blades to spin fast. Doing so places more centrifugal force on the blades than is necessary thus creating the danger of the turbine's blades being pulled from the hub, or resulting in other structural damage. It is better to have the blades spinning slowly while letting a gearbox ramp up the speed to the generator instead of fast spinning blades. This arrangement places far less stress and strain on a wind turbine.

I just love the robotic way of how these Japanese speakers speak English :P It's like a German robot accent in a more modern version...
But jokes aside this is kind of showing the problem. Japan is still not importing and installing the world leading cheapest and best solutions. China is competing with European companies in Africa and really banging their head together to provide wind power at a fraction of the cost what electricity cost in Japan. If you can make that float, great, but you don't have to do everything on your own. And if you want to make it float, hire the Dutch or the Lebanese with their floating islands!
Is Japan again looking at Hawaii?!? Because that is the only place on Earth that has been more able to disregard their huge energy resources and still produce electricity at a huge cost. -

I would suggest to breed fish on the platform as well and why not floors so we can build hotels, house, green house, solar panels everywhere possible, growing food... Why not as private house/boat disconnected completely from the grid?That would be an awesome project. What a great invention! Thanks Japanese engineers.

Very good article on wind generation. I'd be very interested in knowing how attenuation is addressed and/or mitigated transporting the electricity to it's customers, start to finish.

More power (pun intended) to this. The thing that will really get wind and solar really technologically and economically viable is high density batteries to store the energy produced when the wind is blowing and the sun is shinning. Synergy between wind / solar and batteries. Spin offs will be longer range and more power for batteries for electric cars. It is here already. Go to www teslamotors com.
