I've heard slimes can spawn in any light level.. so we can place torches in the farm

While building this I had slimes spawning like crazy once I finished I haven't seen one and its been about an hour :(

For anyone watching this now, slime behavior has changed. In 1.8, their A.I. got updated and they now swim. I think this means that the designs that separate the slimes from other mobs no longer separate them as the slimes swim too.

im alone in a server but no mob spawning in my farm. :(

(0:20) Slimes spawn in swamp biomes between layers 50-70 in light levels of 7 or less.

The swamp trap works fine but in 1.8 your slime Chunk finder stopped working.
I did light up the area with jack o lantens properly but no slimes spawned even when I was 24 blocks away. -
Oh my goodness! I built it. It took me a couple of days, but I built it, and it works! I've got slime balls and bones and string and tnt! I'm very excited. Thanks so much for sharing.

If your platforms are 30x30, then your hole is 36x36, yes?

You manipulate water like wizard. I am very impressed. Is there a reason that the drowning trap does not include a hopper? Also, it doesn't seem to kill the little slimes, so you don't end up with slime balls.

How far away should i stand from the platforms for slimes and mobs to start spawning. (Hostile version)

Ok so im building the hostile mob version and my base is 18x18 and it doesnt work

Yes. For the basic, flat platforms you can use any size you want. For the hostile version, at least one side should have a length of 2+4n, i.e. 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, 30 etc. This way the canals will work out.

Do you mean just leaving out the water, or making a hole instead? First option would be bad, because slimes (small and medium) could get stuck in the gaps, jumping against the wall. By flattening it out, we'd be back at the basic slime farm, obviously. If you made holes instead, the other hostiles wouldn't fall down because of their AI. So they'd block other mobs from spawning on the platform and they'd also be counted against the mob limit for a longer time (until they despawn).
