Jan and Rinske DeJong grew up around dairy in their home country of The Netherlands and continued to work in the business when they first moved to the United States in 1985. Once they saved enough money, they bought their own cows and a farm in Slocomb, Alabama in the southeastern part of the state. After growing the farm to a herd of more than 900 cows they decided to specialize in organics, so they downsized the herd and converted the farm to a certified organic operation. Along with the their three sons, the DeJong’s run Working Cows dairy and also started opened their own creamery which processes milk and other dairy products.
