Meet Antoinette, a Canadienne Cow at the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum. The Canadienne Cow is the only dairy breed to have originated in North America. The Canadienne breed descends from the cows brought by French settlers in the 1600s. They were used for milk, meat, and for farm work. Since the 1850s, however, they became steadily fewer in number as farmers chose to raise more efficient breeds of dairy cows. Antoinette is a bit of a celebrity here at the Museum, not only because of her breed’s historic role, but also because there are so few Canadienne breeds left. http://cafmuseum.techno-science.ca/en/whats-on/dairy-breeds-canadienne.php
