Large Marijuana Factory Found Underground in Rome - as part of the news series by GeoBeats. Drug busts are common around the world however officials in Italy hit a cannabis jackpot in an unexpected place. Police in Rome uncovered a hidden marijuana factory in an abandoned tunnel on a farm. Officials made the discovery after catching a whiff of the telltale pot scent near the entrance of the tunnel. Police searched the underground area, spanning over half a mile, with a portion reportedly underneath the Bank of Italy's vaults and came across rows of cannabis plants valued at approximately $3.7 million. The specialized, underground factory was equipped with halogen lights and an irrigation system. The tunnel was originally built in the 1930s, with plans for a Metro station during the reign of Benito Mussolini. World War II caused the abandonment of the tunnel. The farm owner was arrested, putting a stop to the large operation that reportedly involves at least a dozen individuals. Late last year, another major marijuana bust made reports. Federal officers discovered 32 tons of the drug, valued at $65 million in a sophisticated tunnel in San Diego. The intricate passage contained rail cars, a hidden elevator and hydraulic doors.
