I had so many ideas for a locally themed soap. Erie county has a rich history, as well as thousands of acres of vineyards and farmland. I thought of doing a wine soap featuring my favorite winery, or a farm bar with local milks, animal fat and produce. I ended up becoming inspired by a local landmark that is as much a part of Erie's history as it is my own childhood. I grew up on lake Erie and always used to see the Niagara out sailing. When she wasn't sailing, she was docked near our little boat on the bay at the foot of the city. I was about 10 when the Maritime Museum opened up and I got to take a tour. I still haven't sailed on the brig, but she does work as a training vessel for college age kids during the summer, to help preserve skill of sailing a tall ship as a crew. My daughter and I took a tour of the ship after I made this soap (Even though it was snowy! Typical April in Erie, PA folks!) I hope I did the Brig Niagara justice.
