Siegfried Hofreiter owns 20.000 hectares of farmland making him Europe's biggest farmer. Most of that land is in eastern Germany and Lithuania. Hofreiter does 28 million euros of business every year and his company is listed on the stock exchange. He's seeking to diversify into producing biogas but agriculture is a risky business even at the best of times when the world's population is growing and when prosperity in developing countries is driving up demand for food. Our reporter travelled to Lithuania to meet Hofreiter at his third farm.

shouldn't be farming if you need subsides. look at southern hemisphere farms. no subsides and still can afford to export to northern hemisphere and turn a profit
-
Come to Ukraine you will be having inferiority complex to see the size of farms in Ukraine.
-
man seems very happy

This biggest farmer in Europe said that, if subsidies decrease then the grocery price will go up.
Well, no.
Many European countries re forced to produce only certain amount of farming products by so called quotas, so incredible amount of food is not being produced or dump if quotas exceeded just because countries with cheap labour force are not allowed to produce as much as they could.
They you would see grocery prices going down but German farmers would go bust and this is the real core of the subsides problem. -

-
Wayyyyy tooo biiig.
-
the prices would be so much different if EU wouldn't support these farmers, cause nearby is Ukraine and Russia, that would be happy to sell grain in EU. this german guy would be fast out of business if he wouldn't receive these German subsidies in Lithuania. Lithuania local farmers receive a smaller support per ha than this german guy.

Jo, paskui ateitį tokie vokiečiai tik pinigus skaičiuos, kol lietuviai sunkiai dirbs vokiečiams priklausančias lietuviškas žemes. Lietuvos žemės turi likti Lietuvos piliečių nuosavybė.
-

It really comes down to local farmers deciding that they want to farm successfully and, control their own land. They'll have to do some things differently and, think more like a capitalist, but if there were thousands of small farm capitalists, things would probably be good. The problem comes when a few farmers run everything, while the real farmers are really just farm employees.
