ORONO--According to a 2007 report by the United States Dept. of Agriculture, the U.S. lost 8,900 farms between the years of 2005 and 2006. This equals out to be a little more than one family farm per hour. Due to lack of funding and support, small-scale farms are going out of business everyday. And farm land is being sold for the development of residential areas, parking lots and shopping malls. However a growing interest in sustainability and local food has brought this issue to light, and consumers are returning to their roots by growing their own gardens and forming relationships with their local farmers. This project explores the importance of small-scale, localized farming and how it has been impacted by industrial agriculture.
