Farms: Inside the World's Most Luxurious Prisons

Prison is not supposed to be a vacation, let alone a luxurious one. Yet these prisoners bath in luxury and their time in jail almost looks like a vacation getaway. Subscribe to World5List http://goo.gl/cpJSA6 Find us on... -- http://www.boredbadger.com -- http://www.facebook.com/world5list The slammer, the can, your mother in laws, all great nicknames for prison Going to prison can be a scary time for anyone right down to the most grizzled murderer. But its not always as bad as it seems. In fact, some prisons can be better than our own current living situations. Join us as we have a look at some of the worlds most luxurious vacation getaways… I mean… prisons, and the amenities and benefits that go along with them. We begin with Her Majesty's Prison in Scotland. Unlike most American prisons, the exterior looks unassuming and more like like something you would see if you were driving up to any modern office building for a job interview. Bastoy prison was formerly a prison colony for young boys, that features such luxurious amenities as wooden cottages instead of prison cells, farms to work on and learn horticulture.. and in their spare time, inmates can go horseback riding, enjoy fishing, play a round of tennis.. or even go cross country skiing if they wish. And when we hear the words “maximum security prison”, the first images that might pop into our minds are vicious killers and convicts like Hannibal Lecter or Charles Manson who are such a threat that they need to be contained with serious measures. But that doesn’t seem to be the philosophy of another Norwegian prison in the city of Halden. But then again, getting arrested in Austria wouldn’t be so bad either… especially if you are sent to the Leoban justice center. Moving across the world we find a few inmates who now regret ever having broken the law because their luxury prison was actually shut down. Cordillera Jail in Santiago Chile was once a peaceful retreat for military criminals that featured tennis courts, 5 star meals, luxurious pools, barbecue pits and more. And if you happen to become convicted in Indonesia and have a fair amount of money, you can end up living just like the mobsters in the movie good fellas. Pondok Bambu Prison was exposed when television cameras conducted a surprise inspection and recorded footage that showed its inmates receiving cosmetic laser surgery in their cells that also featured lavish leather furniture that many people on a great income couldn’t even afford. And last but not least on our overseas lists of resorts… uh I mean, rehabilitation facilities is club San Antonio… I mean… San Antonio prison in Venezuela, which looks more like an ongoing rave or night club scenario. Take for example Alderson federal prison camp in West Virginia. This is the same place that Martha Stewart served her time at, and this prison has facilities including tennis courts, swimming pools and even stages for talent shows and musical presentations. Then there is the Pensacola federal prison camp in Florida, which actually employs its inmates and trains them to be landscapers and gardeners.. and after a hard day of work they can relax with movies nights, team sports and more. The Richmond city jail in Virginia has programs for good behavior that include daddy/daughter dance nights in which its inmates can have their families come in for dance parties and more. The inmates also get to dress up in suits and ties and enjoy a lovely evening with their loved ones The Duluth federal prison camp in Minnesota is a rock star criminals haven.. as it features rentable instruments to outfit an entire band. That way you can keep your skills up while waiting to be released and go on your next world tour. The Lompoc correctional facility in California may have recently eliminated their tennis courts, but the grounds still feature volleyball courts, eucalyptus groves and cushy accommodations. And in south Dakota, inmates get the college experience at Yankton… this former university was converted into a prison where inmates have access to wide open spaces, dorm rooms instead of prison cells..

Okay, first off, Alderson Women's Prison is a minimum-security facility, for women who are convicted of largely nonviolent crimes. And the Kennedy Center in Morgantown, WV is a federal minimum-security place, too, so committing federal crimes here won't guarantee you a placement at it, and could as likely end up sending you to another local federal prison--FCI Hazelton, just a few miles from Morgantown, and decidedly NOT a vacation spot.

I prefer every prison to be treated like BLACK DOLPHIN in Russia.

1. don't confuse justice with punishment. 2. prison's main function is to keep people who have done illegal activity and could do illegal activity again away from society. 3. not every criminal is serving life sentence and so it makes sense rehabilitation is another main function of prisons. 4. separating violent crime, career criminal and repeat offenders from the others (like white collar crime) is what leads to different level security prisons. 5. separating prisoners is a very good idea: going into prison for theft or possession and then ending back inside prison after doing worse crime like theft, violent crime, gang related crime or drugs crime is a common problem because prison is a great place to learn from other criminals how to be a criminal. 6. there is a culture and community within all communities and nations that approve criminal activities and some cases even encourage it. using prisons to offer alternative lifestyles (to crime/career crime), better ways of thinking and a chance to leave the culture behind to offenders thru education means there is a higher chance they won't reoffend. 7. it costs a lot of money to keep prisoners locked up, fed, clothed, housed, safe and recorded and with growing prison population all over the world the cost is getting greater. 8. all the points stated previously are great reasons to make sure prisoners are rehabilitated, do not repeat jail time, are kept happy (within the system) and become contributing members of society. Doing this means many governments have recognised how important rehabilitation over punishment is. prisons on this list are mostly good examples of rehabilitation focus. which is progressive and much better then traditional systems relying on intimidation, fear, revenge, punishment and exploitation.

I do prison ministry sometimes with my church... Tennis courts and cosmetic surgeries, that's definitely a little over the top. But also remember that most prisons are horrific. People who have been locked up for crimes they didn't commit learn in prison how to be real criminals. The vast majority of freed inmates end up back in prison because they don't know how to live a good life. I can see how these "vacation resort" prisons are a good thing. People who hurt others were hurt first, every time. Rehabilitation starts with healing the hurts, and your typical prison does nothing short of twisting the knife already in your back.
