From the shadowy corporation that brought you the suicide gene and cancer causing artificial sweetener comes the outbreak Hi guys, Chris Chappell here. So apparently, illegal, genetically modified wheat created by Monsanto somehow just appeared in a farm in Oregon. Now, for a genetically modified crop to enter the biosphere, which basically means the world, it has to be approved by the USDA, the United States Department of Agriculture. That means, you know, they've researched and tested it and are reasonably sure it won't have, shall we say, unintended side effects. Now this strain of Monsanto wheat discovered was never approved by the USDA, which means nobody has any idea what it does! No one's quite sure how this unapproved strain of wheat got there, but don't worry. monsanto say everything's fine. Isolated incident. Monsanto had actually been field testing this genetically engineered wheat beginning in 1998 through 2005, but for some reason, they pulled the application for approval by the USDA. And now, this field test has happened. So what can this genetically modified strain of wheat do? Has it been engineered to be more nutritious, produce bigger yields, what? Actually, its' been modified with a Roundup Ready gene. Roundup Ready is a pesticide Monsanto created. So the idea is, you can dump this super powerful pesticide on crops, kill everything, except Monsanto's patented Roundup Ready crops, and then enjoy, it's time to eat. Hey Ma, roundup the kids. It's Monsanto Roundup Ready Mealtime! Sounds like something a twisted Woody would say. So here's the thing I've always wondered: Monsanto has created a suicide gene for their seed. Basically it means that their crops will kill itself so farmers can't harvest seed. The way that idiot mother nature came up with that totally isn't profitable, and so farmers have to buy seed again from Monsanto every season, becoming totally dependent on their loving corporate culture. So, is there a possibility that somehow those crops could get out in the wild, breed with naturally growing plants, and then all of a sudden suicide genes are just kind of out in the wild? That's a question I'd like answered. But considering how hard Monsanto has lobbied to make sure their products aren't even labeled as GMO, somehow I don't think I'll get an answer to that one. So the debate here is between Monsanto saying, look, Earth is going to find itself jam packed in with 9 billion humans soon; we need new ways of feeding all those people. And the other side that says, since we don't really know what this stuff will to the environment or what happens when people eat it long term, can we at least please label it? Food for thought eh? So what are your thoughts on GMOs? Tasty treats or techno creeps? Comment below and I'll chat you guys up. And share the video with your friends.
