Hey I made the same thing, only I have the pistons on the bottom pushing the blocks up to hold the water. It gets rid of the bulky sides, and looks like a real garden, also makes it so you can go with an 8x15 garden!

1. Not automatic. You can't get an automatic wheat farm without villagers, you can only make an automatic wheat harvester. And this isn't even an automatic wheat harvester, for that you need a daylight sensor that sets the water off after a few days.
2. You're using more pistons and water source blocks than you need to.
3. In terms of expandability, this is terrible.
IMO, the best automatic farm is when you use villagers. Set and forget, you can't beat that. Then you just build it bigger to make higher throughput. -
