http://howtoexpo.com/recipes/brown-basmati-rice-recipe How to cook organic basmati rice recipe. As a family we always eat rice and I like to mix it up a bit and this Brown Basmati rice is one of the recipes on my list. The brand that I bought is Organic, but with this recipe organic or not will work. The total cooking time is 15 minutes, But needs to be soaked for 15 minutes, rinsed and soaked again. Meanwhile, you can prepare the rest of your meal. Its a healthier choice and naturally aromatic. Hope you give a try! - Vera Cooking Basmati rice is easy and the results are always a success. I usually buy Basmati rice in bags at Indian or local ethnic stores and I am pretty sure you should be able to find it in your local chain store but I haven't tried.

I am so confused, does it have to cook for 15, 30 or 40 minutes on medium?? Every website tells a different story.

After 15 minutes of simmering I have another cup or more of water to get absorbed. I presume I'll have mush.
-
this is indian.brown rice

My grandma thought if it wasnt mushy it was raw. LOL Even had my Uncle tells me he wishes I could cook rice. Mine was too dry and not mushy at all. Hee Hee.These old folks.

''Exactly how the package describes it'' says it all! Learn to cook lady, or quit putting out shitty, sticky, over cooked rice videos! Rice is like cooking pasta. It needs to be served al dente. Over cooked sticky rice is for the dogs! But they won't even eat the shit.

One cup Basmati rice. Rinse rice several times in cold water.Add 5-6 cups cold water.Bring rice to boil with lid, remove lid once boiling.Turn down to a slight rolling boil.Cook rice until almost finished. The crunch should just disappear and the rice still a bit hard.5-7 min. Drain water from rise using the pot lid as a strainer.Drain until only drops are coming out.Sit rice on warm surface for 5-10 min. Perfect rice.Your rice should not be sticky, but fall in individual grains, more or less.

I didn't let it sit, I will next time

i'm an Asian :) so rice without flavor is the most delicious ^ _ ^

ive got some california brown basmati rice, the directions on the packaging say to use a 2:1 water/rice ratio, bring to a boil cover and simmer for 50 minutes. I found the cooking time to be too long as it breaks the rice, leaving it gooey and sticky, amongst other things. 30 minutes should be good enough. also soaking/washing rice is always a good idea.... @bettsca what exactly is an "accomplished home cook" lol

Brown rice takes an hour to cook on high boil
-
It's not working for me either. It's on the 3rd 15 min. simmer. Smells good but it's soup. Hope the next 15 mins. does the job.

@HowToExpo I know I probably sounded pretty harsh in the original review, but I followed the recipe to the letter and was really annoyed at the results. The directions, as presented, are not difficult. 15 minutes of simmering just wasn't enough, even with the pre-soak. Most brown rice recipes have a 40 minute simmering time or 25 or 30 if there was a soak. Anywho, I've moved on! Thanks.

@Peeenos Awwww, the little troll came out to protect his mommy! How cute. I bet she gave you a big hug after you managed to type this out on your own!

@bettsca you're an accomplished Home-Asshole , lol go eat your shit rice - whinger.

@bettsca Hi there, this is how we cook brown rice, and actually its exactly how the directions on the packaging describes! Is it possible that you added way to much water to the rice?Or allowed it to soak for far to long? The initial soaking of the rice, then you must drain the excess water to get rid of some of the starch, then add the water amount as demonstrated.Sorry that your rice didn't come out the way you hoped, but others have used this exact recipe and it has worked for them.

This recipe is complete crap. Thanks for helping ruin my rice. I'm an accomplished home cook and was just looking for a decent way of cooking brown basmati and followed the recipe to the letter. 15 minutes simmering was nowhere near enough, the recipe uses way too much water given the soaking time. Cooked it for another 20 and the rice was still slimy, yet edible.

@gmagugo1 Basmati is often known as 'The King'of rice'. It comes mainly from the Punjab and there are both brown and white basmati rice and both are available in organic. You should check out the Glycemic Index but I believe it is valued at 'medium'.
