"New Girl In Town" was a 1957 Broadway musical which was based upon Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning play "Anna Christie". Gwen Verdon and Thelma Ritter starred in the show, with a book by George Abbott and music and lyrics by Bob Merrill. Gwen Verdon played Anna, and in this ironic song - Anna describes to her father Chris Christopherson (Cameron Prud'homme) and his "old lady" Marthy (Thelma Ritter) how her "safe" life "On The Farm" - where Anna was sent by her father to live with her cousins when she was a little girl - started her descent into a life of prostitution. OY! My folks built a house in the 1950s on Dad's farmland and away from our nice big house in town. Isolation and boredom for me. Glad to be living in a city. The bigger the city, the better.

Hi! when will you be posting the entire musical New Girl In Town?
-
I saw this during it's relatively brief run. Of course Gwen Verdon was terrific as was Thelma Ritter. While a large step from O'Neill, it deserved a larger audience than it found.

Thanks for posting this and this song is really disturbing when you know about Anna being molested by her relatives.
