Farms: Grocery Shopping in Switzerland
Productivity | Information | History | View | Quality
I got asked to stop filming!!! Hahahah....must be more stealthy next time although that's kind of hard with the big open spaces and staff members everywhere. Just a note, this is a really big store - most grocery stores here are not quite as big as this but many metropolitan areas have one or two of these megastores where you can also find a restaurant, a phone store, electronics, home hardware and a drugstore beside the grocery. Something I didn't address: the prices. Food prices in Switzerland are among the highest in all of Europe, for example much higher than in neighbouring countries like Germany or France. However, the quality of the food is in some ways also higher. Much of the meat comes from Swiss farms, and although the cost of having livestock in an expensive country like Switzerland is exorbitant, the quality of the meat is also really amazing. Organic food is very popular in Switzerland with usually a very large assortment available at all the big chain grocers. All organic food must be officially certified by an independent commission, and the criteria for becoming an organic farmer are very stringent. Swiss people in general care a lot about their food, where it comes from, the quality of the meat and produce, and the conditions the animals live in. However, all this comes at a pretty hefty price. Sometimes I wish food was cheaper and that Switzerland allowed more foreign imports to bring down prices, but on the other hand I think it is great that supporting Swiss farmers helps to keep up a high standard of food grade, versus cheap mass imports that are of inferior quality.

On 5:50 the lady didn't mention that Emmentaler (what Americans call Swiss cheese) comes in three different varieties:
Mild, salty and "cave matured". Believe me, it's true! -
is there expensive shopping malls in switzerland???

Thank you for explaining what a restaurant is and what can be purchased there. I literally had no idea what it's function was until seeing this video. Could you do a feature on why women go to the restroom in pairs please?

$4.50 for 1kg Peaches??? Wow that is cheap! In Australia, The Land of Peaches is almost $12.00. I'm not a great fan of peaches, I'd have one now and then! but even if it was on special I would walk past it.

Yeah Switzerland food has a very high quality. I always notice that, when i'm in countries like france or germany. The meat is very high quality. I think that's good, because the meat is the most important thing in a meal and when the meat is not good everything is a little bit less good. Also the prices are very high, but in switzerland you earn morn money than in other countries. For visitors that's sometimes a little weird. Also i think alcohol age of 16 is good, because you can learn how to deal with alcohol.

Thanks for making the video and getting kicked out of the store! Don't know about Switzerland but one thing that I noticed in Germany was most of their milk is flavored. I was told its because the feed for the milk cows is poor so the milk tastes bad. I can't remember all the flavors but it was impressive. Should've taken some photos but probably would've gotten arrested. Blueberry milk is one I remember for some reason.
Steaks are poor quality compared to US for the same reason of poor feed. That's why Germans loved to deal in the black market with US soldiers. The US would ship in American food products. Frozen corn on the cob was a favorite of some Germans. It was illegal by German law and US Army regulations but if you were low profile you could make a nice side income. -
I like yogurt but not that much! Around Stuttgart Germany you could buy porn at the grocery store checkout. Not all groceries had that but some did.
The booze buying age would send safety freaks in the US into a stupor! Grade school kids drinking wine at a restaurant in France...normal. -
It's pretty common in Europe as a whole for supermarkets to sell alcohol I think. They do here in the Netherlands as well. But only undistilled alcoholic drinks like beer and wine.

wall mart should put one of those machines that tells you the price of the fruit or vegetables
-
It's not called co-op, you just say "cop" :D
-
That whole round of epoisses cheese would be about $25 in America, so really not that expensive as far as cheese goes :)
