From the time he could barely swim, like all of his family going back three generations, Will Hanigan was initiated into an exotic business that is conducted beneath the waves. Will’s family are pearl divers and pearl farmers—those who cultivate, grow and harvest the magnificent gems that have been treasured by women and men alike since the age of the Pharaohs. Hanigan is the son of a Master Pearler, as they are known. Most of his life has been spent in the traditional pearling environment—diving, harvesting and working along the shores of an 80-mile stretch of beach in Australia’s remote Northwest. While many Australian pearls are the traditional style you might see in high-fashion magazines and at the highest-quality jewelers around the world, Will’s own sensibility impels him to create a new style of pearls—more reflective of a new generation who, while valuing the pearl’s beauty, is not necessarily looking for the traditional strand or setting.
