Farms: Gardens, Truck Patches, and Fields - What on Earth am I Doing? - The FHC Show, ep 13
Productivity | Information | History | View | Quality
There are as many different views of what a garden or farm is, as there are farmers and gardeners. And a lot of it has to do with one's culture, experience, or perspective. There are numerous classifications for gardeners, farmers, and the agriculture they practice these days (homesteader, commercial, organic, community supported agriculture, subsistence, permaculture, natural, sustainable agriculture) and all kinds of places to practice these methods (homestead, commercial farm, organic farm, subsistence farm, mini farm, micro farm, hobby farm, cottage farm, small farm). Farming and gardening is becoming popular again, but knowing where you fit in to this vast world of farms and farming methods is the first step in knowing what you’re trying to accomplish on your farm or in your garden. In this 13th episode of The Farm Hand's Companion Show, Pa Mac explores these things—giving historical perspective along the way—while presenting some of the handicaps he'll be overcoming with his own farm and garden. You'll learn the differences between a garden, a truck patch, and a field. Be sure and subscribe to the Farm Hand's Companion channel to keep up with the progress as Pa Mac takes an undeveloped piece of property and turns it into a small subsistence farm. Watch for new episodes as often as Pa Mac can crank 'em out and still run a farm. (As long as he's alive and kicking, he's most assuredly farming and filming!) Also visit http://www.farmhandscompanion.com to find articles, posts, photographs, and encouragement for today's self-sufficient farm or homestead. (And be sure to check out the General Store for books or DVD's by Pa Mac.)

Really enjoy your common sense approach to everything, along with your sense of humour! If you make many videos like this one, you wont have time for farming!

RE: Clearing land and adding organic matter quickly...
I have a homesteading friend who rents a chipper once a year for a weekend only. While they have it, they run through their property right before it snows to chip up as much as they can (unwanted saplings, brush, twigs, etc.) and have the kids spread it all out with rakes. They managed to clear all but old growth and a new orchard on about 30 acres like yours in just a few years. It's beautiful and the brushy undergrowth stopped coming in because the mulching chokes it all out. It would definitely benefit you to do all your cutting and chopping and then borrow a chipper for a few days before the snow flies 😀 you would be surprised at how much you can mulch in one weekend when it's just lying on the ground ready to go!😄 Good luck! -
you see all your subscribers, you need to do some more videos, you have Fans!!!!

I Love your story. Now that you built a home for your chickens and tools, are you gonna build a small home for yourself? Or are you content in your workshop? You got a stove. All you need is running water. I could live in that shop, it's a work of art. Keep up the great flicks :-)

I think he lost his farm...

I'm a huge fan of your channel, and I am so appreciative of the time and love you put into creating this highly educational and charming series.
That said, I was a little more than disappointed that your presentation of the history of farming in America (particularly in the south and even more particularly on cotton fields) was so...well...there's no other word for it but "whitewashed". Not because I think it was necessary for you to critically explore its political or ethical implications for the purposes of this video, but because over a span of 400 years, slavery played an ENORMOUS economic role in the agricultural success of the south (and portions of the north), and literally would not have been achievable otherwise. I just found it troubling that you acknowledged the necessity of field hand labor on these crop farms (particularly cotton fields) but portrayed that help as coming only from the kindness of one's own community. You even used an illustration at one point clearly portraying a southern plantation with no indication at all of who was actually working its fields.
Again, I wouldn't expect this particular video to offer a critical analysis of slavery, as I understand that's not its intended purpose, but simply erasing it entirely from the history of agriculture in the south is both factually misleading and ethically irresponsible. -
What I really enjoy about your channel is that it shows all of us the joy from using your own hands making the job of Homesteading, Farming and so forth even better. I'm so happy your channel is on here I as a young farmer look forward to your next video.

May you live for many years yet and continue making this series. I want to see the whole farm and cows and crops and everything! :)

So we bought a plot last year, gave it a go this summer, and now the wife seems more interested in going back. We learned a lot and had a blast. The trouble is twofold, however. How do we make a living, and how do we reprogram ourselves to the rural lifestyle (e.g. living with mice).

Love your vids farmer...

The beautiful thing about turnips, is that hogs will turn them into side pork. Love the videos.

You toke the making videos to another level and stopped just when youtube make the bigbang and everyone is making videos, (plus making that house is not something that takes 2 weekends...). So nice to have found you here. Keep rocking!

This took me back to my childhood. Thanks very much. I would love to do this myself, but age and health issues seem to be in the way. I am glad for you to be able to do it though. I enjoy your videos so much.
