Fire destroyed a detached garage at 55 Central Turnpike. Fire Chief Matthew Belsito said the one-car garage and sally port were a total loss. He said there was a farm tractor and an ATV inside. Firefighters arrived about 3 p.m. to find the garage engulfed in flames. The chief said firefighters with Engine 3 used the 1,000 gallons of water on their truck to fight the fire and to wet the accompanying two residences near the fire. "It was an unbelievably good stop," Chief Belsito said. He said the heat of the fire melted siding on a smaller residence 30 feet away and a larger residence 60 feet away. The chief said an additional engine and tanker truck brought more water to the scene. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, and other than the melted siding, the fire did not spread to the other residences. The chief said the extent of the damage may prevent the exact cause from being determined, but said he believed the fire was accidental. The state fire marshal's office is assisting with the investigation.
