"A nice thing about having a show set in the woods is that you don't need to have an elaborate set,"
That's what I said -
Stage to screen returns? Radical!

THE LAST FEW MINUTES YES!!! Oh I've missed this. The secrets, the mystery, the complicated plots that make use of seemingly endless personas! This is what makes this channel so much more awesome than all the other reviewing channels. Can't wait to see what happens next. 😄😄😄😄

Triva about the movie
In earlier drafts, the Narrator from the original stage musical was still part of the story. Before the role was written out of the script, many actors were either considered, in talks, or asked to play the role including Jeremy Irons, Christopher Plummer, Geoffrey Rush, James Earl Jones, John Cleese, Michael Caine, Michael Gambon, and Alan Rickman. There were even rumors about giving this role to a female such as Julie Andrews or Angela Lansbury who are both Disney favorites as well as experts on Stephen Sondheim's material. -
The movie adaption was okay in my opinion, while the many other people hated for being a long movie. Seriouly? What's you're problem with musicals? If you haven't seen the original Brodway production, go see it before seeing the movie. Also can you do Sweeney Todd, Phantom of the Opera, or Les Miserables?

Editing Matt what you doing man

I'm so happy to see you doing these again. Keep up the good work!

Last year I saw a performance of Into the Woods for the first time. Those death scenes give me chills just thinking about them. Wait a minute... 😱 I'm screaming inside my head!!! Also, NO MORE STEVEN KING, PLEASE! 😖 You made an entire video on listing possible BvsM reviews, including Hunger Games. Is that close enough to Steven King for you?

Fantastic analysis, Matt! Fair and concise as always.
My first introduction to Into the Woods was the Disney film, and I initially found myself not liking it due to the second act. The changes you described from the stage musical seem to explain why I didn't care for it.
For one, Rapunzel's death being in the movie would have made SO much more sense. The Witch's development in Act II of the movie lacks real motivation, and her death was never really explained well. Was it suicide? Some weird kinda self-sacrifice? The movie gives us a vague answer rather than an explicit one, which is a departure from her musical numbers in Act I.
Also, like you mentioned, the lack of intermission hurt The Prince and Baker's Wife's development in the film. He comes off as super promiscuous, and she comes off as easily seduced.
I say all that to say, when I got around to listening to the Into the Woods Broadway recording, I enjoyed it a lot more than the film. Most of the second act issues didn't bother me, and overall it feels slightly less gloomy than Disney's effort. I still really enjoy what Disney did with Act I of Into the Woods, plus you've gotta love that cast. Easily one of the best casts Disney has ever assembled. -
I'll admit I avoided the film for a while because it looked like a production of Joe Roth, who also produced Alice in Wonderland, Snow White and the Huntsman, Oz: The Great and Powerful and Maleficent, all of which I either dislike or dispise. They seem to take a lot of inspiration from Into the Woods, Wicked and Once Upon a Time, but they don't seem to get what worked about those shows. Having realised recently that Roth never touched this one, I might give it a watch. Great review as always.

Books vs Movies: The Hunger Games PLEASE!!

It really is interesting to see these "impossible" movie musicals being made. There are so many of these that I'd love to see (especially Secret Garden; I need that while we still have Maggie Smith to be Medlock).

Does this video contain spoilers for either story?

Great video, Matt. Into the Woods is one of my favorites as well, and at first I was skeptical because this musical is so theatrical. Overall I was satisfied with this adaptation though I wish it did keep the death of Rapunzel because the Witch's motivation doesn't seem to be all there without it.
Sorry, I couldn't help myself.
