Re the bird and its eggs, "kievit"is called a "lapwing" in English. Traditionally the person who finds the first one of the season gets to present it to the Queen.... 4 eggs in a nest is called a "broertje", it is the maximum of eggs found in one nest.

This is making me homesick!!! Thank you though.
-
you mean the netherlands because holland is just two provinces of it

-

Friesland is 1 of the 12 provinces. The country is the Netherlands, Holland does not excist. It's like people would call America Texas instead of the USA. Holland is 2 provinces, 1/6 of the country, not the country it self. Holland is a historic region that is now divided in North-Holland & South-Holland. Friesland used to be Frisia, a free country with a own language and identity that has survived to this day. Greetings from a ducthmen (according to my passport..) but a Frisian in heart & soul!

Me as well? A gentleman I'd like to think so, a great farmer? Well that remains to be seen, though Auke did let me milk a cow on one visit to his farm. ;-)

He invited me to Halland hehe crazy accent but cool you kept in touch. I live in Ontario, Canada and my mother is from Friesland. It looks so beautiful, I've never been there.

I was born here in Franeke. I am so glad you did this video. Excellent.. and his accent sounds like all of my family that are still there.. We them moved to Australia.. Then my grandmother who had already moved to California bought properties. She liked being a landlord. She asked my dad to help. My parents should never have left Australia. They were very happy there and I did not see that when they moved to the USA...To bad.. some people are just meant to stay put. ;))

@thall89553 Ure welcome. Its nice to share some culture becouse most people (even the dutch) know a little about the frisians. Im a frisian and i like the province. Theres some specials sports in friesland, one of them is searching eggs. Whoever finds the first Lapwing-egg gets a price and the honor ofcourse. Its harder as many people think and the lapwing is a master in bringing you on a wrong track. He pops up a big distance from its nest, letting you think the nest is were he is but its not.

@Tijgerpapzak Thanks for much for sharing this information, it will be useful for a lot of people I'm sure.

The kievit (Ljip in Frysian) is called Northern Lapwing in English. The frisians have a long history and have their own history. The Frisii began settling in Frisia around 500 BC. According to Pliny the Elder, in Roman times, the Frisians (or their close neighbours, the Chauci) lived on terps, man-made hills. According to other sources, the Frisians lived along a broader expanse of the North Sea coast. Frisia at this time comprised the present provinces of Friesland and North Holland.

I'm Australian, but my family came from Holland, and in particular Friesland. It's kind of freaky that a dutch person who saw my last name, new exactly which province/area my family came from, and it was Friesland. I was like wow.
-
@Nena6Lozara The farm is owned by Teastke Ann & Auke Van Dijk (not sure of spelling). They are in Makkum and would probably welcome a visit.
-
I'm doing a research paper on Friesland, because I'm currently studying in Twente, Netherlands. I would love to go to that farm and see it myself!! :)
-
@thall89553 I'm dutch. Friesland is a province of 12 of Holland or Netherlands. But they have kinda their own language.
