Farms: Foie Gras in 60 Seconds Flat
Productivity | Information | History | View | Quality
Would you step inside the life of a bird raised for foie gras for just one minute? To produce foie gras (which literally means "fatty liver"), workers ram pipes down the throats of male ducks or geese two or three times a day and pump as much as 4 pounds of grain and fat into their stomachs, causing their livers to swell to up to 10 times their normal size. They feel extremely ill, and many have difficulty standing or even breathing because of their engorged livers. Additionally, the birds are kept in tiny cages or packed into sheds. They may tear out their own feathers or attack each other out of extreme stress. On some farms, a single worker may be expected to force-feed 500 birds three times each day. Because the workers rush, the animals are often treated roughly and end up with injuries. Please, never eat foie gras or any other animal products. Many of the most empathic higher animals (especially among birds and mammals) are being treated like shit. We don't care if these animals enjoy their lives. Some of us boast about "our science" all day, but when science reveals to us the emotional life, the empathy, the social bonding etc. of such animals, we just decide not to care about such things like force-feeding these ducks and geese until their livers swell to up to 10 times their normal size - because it is so much more important what we want on our plate tonight.
It comes down to this: we are only passengers on this planet - but we behave like greedy monsters who just do what we fancy we are entitled to do, even while there are alternatives. It's like we make ourselves believe the world was 'scientifically designed' to be human-centric. It's like we believe in some sort of generally applicable "Yes We Can" human-supremacist hegemony over nature, we see the world through this lens, this western superiority belief, and we self-authorize our often criminal behavior by defining the word 'crime' according to our own standard, limiting it to certain acts against people, excluding animals from the right not to be mistreated. -
Money rules the world, that's all

I hate these bastards! May they all die a horrible death. I believe in karma and I hope they get theirs real soon. It's no wonder I love animals more than most human beings!
