This is a research project for my EWS 301 class. It details the history of Filipino farm workers in Hawaii during the 1900s. These were the first Filipinos to migrate to America for work. Filipinos were supposed to be American citizens during its Commonwealth years except that certain legal technicalities were upheld. Only Filipinos (Spaniards born in the Philippine Islands called INSULARES) became US citizens automatic. Filipino natives or INDIOS did not so they were exploited by everyone and discriminated by the so called SUPERIOR ones(orientals, south pacific types and haoles). They arrived in Hawaii as laborers. Most signed their labor contracts with their thumbs. They brought with them their cultural peculiarities, sad to say. The smart ones/troublemakers were deported. Some said that they were lied to by the so called THOMASITES......LOL

I don't know about Filippinos, They're small people but very good at Multi-tasking, Very Relliable and Easy to adapt to any environment. Maybe it's a Southeast Asian thing.

Due to the lack of photos of filipino plantation workers i threw in a few from other events so as not to repeat the photos as much as possible. My emphasis was on the information being provided not necessarily the photos in the background.

Why do the filipinos have guns in 1:04? I thought they were here to work on the plantations.

I see. Great job on the project.

To be honest it was the first song that came to mind. I wanted to project a certain emotion with the background music, and had I known any Filipino music that fit with what I was going for I would have used it instead. As a side note this was a group project so not al the music was my choice and thinking back i wish I had been able to use Filipino music.
-
Can I ask you why you chose this song? It's not Filipino.

thank you for your video you've helped me alot in my presentation :)

Thats true and its a big part of Filipino immigration, but i left it out of this video because i wanted to focus on Hawaii, which is where it all started.

The Filipino also worked side by side with the Mexican farm worker and together they formed the United Farm Workers Union and fought for Farm workers rights in California and across the USA.
