Growing up during the Depression in Framingham, MA, working on his father's farm, Femia enlisted in the Army at 18. After basic training at Camp Hood, Texas, then at Camp Carson and Camp Roberts, he went overseas in 1944 as a machine gunner. Shortly after D-Day he landed on Omaha Beach with the Third Armored Division, 36th Army Infantry and joined the push across France. Receiving shrapnel wounds in his legs, he was a month in hospital in Wales, then assigned to the Belgium Harbor Craft as an MP. With VE Day, he was ordered to prepare to ship out to the South Pacific, only to hear of Japan's surrender. He had enough points to go home and on New Year's Day 1946 arrived in New York Harbor.
