'Farming the Ancient Waters of the Desert' shows how Abu Minqar's farmers strive towards a more sustainable use of finite groundwater for farming Egypt's Western Desert. The film is based on data generated throughout a three-year participatory research project the Desert Development Center at the American University in Cairo conducted in Abu Minqar. This project focused on community-based water management and formed part of the regional water initiative WaDImena, funded by the International Development Research Center. An interdisciplinary, international team researched the community's resource management, irrigation and agricultural systems. In September 2007, the team helped found a farmers association that has since successfully implemented three projects which created immediate improvements in the community's water use efficiency.
