"Back then, families had to pull together to survive. That meant bread on the table in the winter." Sustainable Blairstown sponsored the Farmer Talks series at the Blairstown Farmers Market in August, 2010. The series included live, recorded interviews with a number of the local farmers who participate in the market. Shoppers visiting the market where able to sit in on the sessions, ask questions and learn about the lives and work of the men and women who keep the tradition of farming alive in Warren and Sussex Counties. In this segment of Farmer Talks, Bob Best of Best's Fruit Farm, draws from his 65 years of experience working on his family's farm that was established in Hackettstown, N.J., just after World War II. From the age of 10, Bob was driving a tractor and clearing fields alongside his father. A peach and apple specialist, Bob talks about the necessity of planning years in advance in order to reap the rewards of the orchard. Looking forward, Bob expresses concerns about the future of the small family farm in the face of significant financial and regulatory constraints.
