An impromptu weekend stop leaves my mom and I deep in a forests in...ALLENDALE New Jersey? It's hard to believe that North Jersey has such thriving vegetation and wildlife, but the Celery Farm is one sample of greenery in the Garden State. (Sorry about the bumpy camera... I was not expecting to stop so I didn't have my tripod or any way to steady my phone.) ;-\

My mom was born here at this farm in Allendale. She grew up here with her family farming the celery. They worked for Appert.

Many years ago, at the bend of East Allendale Avenue, stood a farm. . .Tonus Farms. There were stables there (where I boarded my horse for a time), horse turn-outs, a small riding ring, and two small fields that were rented out to pumpkin farmers. In the back of the farm was a wooded area. If you walked through the woods, it took you into the Celery Farm/nature preserve.
I recall strolling through there with my husband. It was beautiful and very peaceful. Hard to imagine such places existed smack in the middle of Allendale, but they did.
Tonus Farms is gone - sold to a developer who built condos. The Celery Farm remains and I would love to visit there again, if only for nostalgia's sake. Thanks for the vid!
