A massive blaze destroyed an onion packaging building at Big O Farms on Thanksgiving morning. Over a 100 fire companies were either called to the scene or put on standby for those who were called to the scene. According to Genesee County Fire Coordinator, Tim Yaeger, a deer hunter was in the area about 7:00 a.m. and noticed smoke coming from the southeast rear section of the building at North Bergen and Transit road in Elba and called 9-1-1. "The building was a commercial design building with no sprinkler system in it," says Yaeger. "There was a lot of heavy equipment and limited access for the fire service to get into the building. A water source was a big concern during the fire. There is only one hydrant that services the area and it is a small capacity hydrant system. So all the water had to be trucked in and with the recent low water levels we had in the region, many water sources that they would use normally were pretty diminished." A round trip for a tanker was 4-6 miles. The building held a lot of wooden crates, equipment, machines, and vehicles. Most of the onlons were not stored in the building. The business is owned by Mark and John Torrey. They were able to retrieve computers and files from the office area and a flatbed truck form the front portion of the building. Yaeger says the building and its contents are a total loss. No one was injured in the fire. He says the estimated loss is between 1-2 million dollars. The cause of the fire is being investigated and it is believed a piece of equipment that was plugged in may have started the fire in the southeast rear section of the building. Fire crews will check on the site for flare ups as much of the building will now be demolished in a few days. The Salvation Army also showed up on scene along with Ladies Auxiliary to provide the fire crews with food and drinks. Firefighters were on scene for almost 10 hours. There is word that the owners are looking to rebuild.
