Dockery Farms, between Cleveland and Ruleville, Mississippi: cotton plantation with original barns and machinery. Around 1900, there lived and worked about 2000 people, including many blues musicians. Dockery had a store, its own currency, its own doctor, and was to be known, to be good for the employees and that was rare. Dockery has produced many celebrities, including Charley Patton, 1890 - 1934, the first blues singer who was generally known, because there are 56 songs recorded of him. Well..I've never got to go south...very far..or east...I hope I can take a tour of the south west before I kick the bucket. I want to see this and go to Navasota , Texas to see the Mance Lipscomb statue. oh, I should try to go to Robert Johnsons grave...and look for the crossroads.

why do you think old charlie had the blues?
-
dockery was a labour camp for blacks they made nothing had no benefits and they evicted poor old charlie patton i'm sure if he could he would have set the whole damn place on fire!
-
Other people helped patton have the blues
-
Henry Sloan did not just help him become famous other people
-
Dear Jason, thank you so much!

VERY cool. VERY interesting!

Charley Patton said ( in '34 Blues) : "They run me from Will Dockery's, Willie Brown, I want your job!" Ironic that they place is known now for the man they fired and evicted

thanks catman5169... we made our first trip to Greenwood, Indianola, Leland, etc last summer. looking forward to returning.

Fantastic! I remember the drive from Greenwood to Cleveland and Delta State when I would pass through Dockery. There were two pink early 50's Cadillacs under the carport...the trunks were just outside the carport, and were rusting where the rain kept falling on them. As an aside, if memory serves me correctly, the road is so crooked going through because the Dockerys insisted the road go by each building on the farm; if not, they would not let the highway be paved.
