More than 1,000 farmers were protesting outside the European Union headquarters in Brussels, while other demonstrators have blocked milk processing plants in France. The farmers say they have been forced to sell milk at below production costs because prices have fallen up to 50 percent over the past year. The EU said it was intervening with support measures as much as it could to boost the market. EU farm ministers are expected to meet later on Monday and are expected to discuss ways to help the dairy farmers. France and Germany have promised to coordinate support action. Farmers in Germany demonstrated too, even as the German government responded to weeks' long protest by the nation's dairy producers on Monday by lowering the tax on diesel for agricultural purposes. The government said it was trying to ease what they called a "difficult situation" in the sector. Under the new regulation, farmers will only have to pay 25 euro cents per litre of fuel, as compared with 40 euro cents, which officials estimate will amount to an average annual savings of 285 million (m) euros (398 million (m) US dollars) per farm. "With this regulation, we are helping to ensure the existence of farms in the agricultural sector and provide for the welfare of our farmers," the parliamentary leaders of the Christian Democratic Union, Voker Kauder, and Social Democrats, Peter Struck, said in a statement.
